【CarPlay Unit】We’ve sourced a CarPlay/Android Auto unit for our restomod E-Type. For this, we chose a Japanese manufacturer: the Kenwood DMX5523S.
Our selection criteria were:
1. Wireless CarPlay/Android Auto support
2. Compact size
3. Touch controls, with no buttons along the bottom
4. A built-in microphone
Applying these criteria actually left very few options, making this model practically the only choice.
We’ll install it flush in the lower dashboard, where the original AM radio was. With its compact 7-inch screen, it looks like nothing more than a black box when the display is off, so we expect to be able to fit it while preserving as much of the E-Type’s classic atmosphere as possible.
Wireless connectivity with a smartphone means there won’t be cables cluttering the cabin. (We’ll install a separate wireless charging pad in the center console to charge the phone.)
Some people dislike modern equipment like this, but the fact is that many also consider smartphone navigation and music essential. Everyone brings a smartphone into the car anyway, and pretending it isn’t there ultimately leaves the cabin cluttered with cables and aftermarket phone holders.
We believe the value we add through our restomods lies in the thought and ingenuity we put into modernizing the car while respecting and preserving its original character.
The answer differs for each owner, and exploring the possibilities and finding that answer is part of the enjoyment of being restomod builders 😄
